Google Expands Local Business Search Blocks in Europe: Who Needs to Prepare Their Site

On September 18, Google added local business to its special search results documentation. I explain the requirements for direct providers and aggregators, and what this means for international SEO.

On September 18, 2026, Google expanded its search block documentation for aggregators and direct providers to include local business queries. This refers to a special results format for users in the European Economic Area. This is not an announcement of a similar launch for Russia.

The news has practical implications for companies already serving European audiences: local services, comparison platforms, and directories. However, preparation depends on the business role. Own services and catalogs of third-party offers participate in different mechanisms.

Two Types of Participants

The aggregator block is designed for specialized search platforms. Participation requires meeting Google's conditions and providing the necessary data. For local business, the documentation specifies a separate format for transmitting information about locations.

A direct provider block may appear nearby, for example, for the organizations providing the services themselves. It is shown when an aggregator block is present. To participate, a direct provider does not need to submit additional data beyond what is available to the search crawler; this does not guarantee appearance in the search results.

Why a Russian website does not need an urgent redesign

If a company operates only in a single Russian city, the new format does not create an immediate requirement. Purchasing a "mandatory integration with the new Google block" without verifying the market and conditions would be premature.

However, if the business has a foreign subsidiary or a separate offering for EEA users, it is worth checking the corresponding pages. A single English version of a general website does not explain where the company actually accepts orders or what service it provides locally.

What must be clear from the service page

Visitors need a specific service area, contact terms, and a way to reach the service provider. A page listing dozens of cities without actual service in them does not replace a local offer.

For multiple branches, it is useful to distinguish addresses, operating hours, and available services. If the hours on the website differ from those in other public listings, a customer may arrive at a closed door. Fixing such an error is beneficial regardless of the new search result format.

The task is more complex for a catalog

Aggregators must maintain the accuracy of a large volume of records. Stable organization identifiers, update rules, and handling of closed locations are critical. Otherwise, automated data distribution will only accelerate the spread of outdated information.

I would start by auditing the quality of your own catalog: how many cards have verified addresses, current terms, and working pages. Discussing technical integration makes sense only after this, not instead of it.

How to evaluate the benefit for promotion

Before the changes, record which countries your interested visitors come from and which pages generate leads. Then monitor the target market separately. Overall site traffic can mask the effect within a small international audience.

Google's news is an opportunity to refine your strategy where your business actually operates. For some companies, this is a new chance for search representation; for others, it is information for the future. Strong SEO begins with this distinction, not with identical urgent work for all sites.
