Extending a Domain via ESIA: What to Check Before and After Payment

Paying the invoice is no longer sufficient for domain renewal: the administrator's data must undergo identification via ESIA. We examine what to verify before the renewal window opens and how to confirm the result.

As of September 1, 2026, paying the invoice alone is insufficient to renew domain .RU or .РФ. The registrar performs the operation only after identifying the administrator via ESIA — the Unified System for Identification and Authentication used by Gosuslugi. Therefore, verification should begin before payment: first determine who the domain is registered to and whether their data matches the ESIA account.

A practical criterion is simple: the registrar's cabinet shows the operation as completed, the paid-till date has shifted to the next year, the domain is delegated, and the website, email, and certificate continue to function. A receipt or money deduction confirms the payment but does not replace this result.

What Changed After September 1

In the explanation by the Coordination Center for .RU/.РФ domains, operations requiring ESIA identification are listed: registration, renewal, transfer of administrative rights, registrar change, delegation, and other significant actions. For individuals, a confirmed Gosuslugi account is required; simplified or standard accounts are insufficient. Legal entities must verify their organization account.

A domain already registered is not automatically disabled due to September 1. It remains active until the paid term expires. However, renewal is impossible without successful identification: delegation ceases after the term ends, and registration may be cancelled after the preferential renewal period. New rules and decrees are published in the Coordination Center's document section.

First, Find the Real Administrator

The payer, website owner, and domain administrator may be different people. The registry cares about administrator details. If a company domain was once registered under a director, contractor, or employee, access to the organization's bank card alone does not grant the right to renew it on behalf of another person.

  • Open the domain card with the registrar and note who is listed as the administrator: an individual or an organization.

  • For an individual, verify the confirmed ESIA account and the accuracy of the full name, date of birth, and passport details.

  • For an organization, ensure the legal entity account is active and the employee has the authority to perform the operation.

  • Compare the contact email and phone number in the registrar's cabinet: they are required for notifications, even if the primary address for identification is taken from ESIA.

  • If the details do not match or the domain is registered to an unavailable employee, do not wait for the renewal date: request the registrar's procedure for updating information or transferring administrative rights.

After September 1, transferring administrative rights also requires identification. Therefore, the problem of a domain being registered to the wrong person cannot be solved by simply changing the details on the invoice.

When to start if the deadline has not yet expired

The .RU and .РФ domain registration system sets the domain registration term to one year. The registry technically allows renewal up to 60 days before the paid-till date. After that date, a 30-day preferential renewal period begins, but delegation stops and the site becomes unavailable at the standard address.

Of these 90 days, only the first 60 are suitable for calm, planned work. The last 30 constitute an emergency return window, not a free time buffer. For a store domain, I would check at least 30 days before the paid-till date who is listed as the administrator and whether their account has passed identification in the Unified System of Identification and Authentication (ESIA). This leaves time to correct data discrepancies without stopping the website or corporate email.

If funds have been deducted but the operation remains pending or the paid-till date has not changed, do not repeat the payment blindly. Save the operation number and contact the registrar: they can see the reason for the identification failure or the application delay.

Checklist for 30 days before paid-till

  1. Record the current registrar, administrator, and paid-till date in the control panel. Use public WHOIS as an additional check, not as a replacement for the control panel.

  2. Verify the confirmed ESIA individual account or organization account and the employee's permissions.

  3. Start identification from the registrar's control panel and ensure the data is matched successfully.

  4. If a discrepancy is found, request the exact correction procedure from the registrar. Do not change the administrator to a random person just to speed up renewal.

  5. Top up the balance or pay the invoice and wait for the operation status to complete.

  6. Verify that the paid-till has shifted to the next year. Save the operation confirmation and the new date.

  7. Check DNS resolution, website accessibility, corporate mail reception, and TLS certificate validity. Domain renewal must not alter these settings, but verification helps identify isolated issues.

To independently verify the date and registrar, use the WHOIS service. After renewal, compare DNS responses via DNS record verification, and check the certificate through SSL verification. Results from these services confirm specific technical facts; they do not indicate whether identification via ESIA has been completed.

What result to consider sufficient

Renewal can be considered confirmed when the actual domain administrator is known, ESIA has been successfully matched at the registrar, the application has completed without error, the paid-till date has been extended to the next year, and the website and related services are accessible. For an organizational domain, add one more criterion: the control must not depend on the personal account of an unavailable employee.

Information verified on November 1, 2026, based on materials from the Coordination Center for .RU/.РФ domains. The order of buttons and statuses varies among registrars, so disputed results must be confirmed with their support. This material explains operational checks and does not replace legal advice regarding rights to a specific domain.
